So Season 2 is done, there's been a runaway bride that isn't Julia Roberts (but still had red hair) and now a medical feisty Martha.

My thoughts...

I wasn't sad to see Rose (and her family) go but I was kinda touched by the whole scene and the Doctor's emotions about it all. Rose certainly added life and spark to the Doctor and as much as she annoyed me, I think I agree with [livejournal.com profile] iyalode's sentiments about her being good for him.

But Donna (Catherine Tate) just cracked me up no end. I really really wanted her to stay with the Doctor. Her humour and thickness about some things was just... wonderful! The whole story for Runaway Bride was fantastic and I liked the parallel's to Amy in season five. Red headed brides obviously made an impression on Ten :)

I hope Donna appears again! (Don't spoil me if she does)

And now Martha. One episode of season three in and I already like her more than Rose. Quick, witty, intelligent and well... kinda wonderful (and this after just one episode).

I look forward to more Martha.

I am restraining myself from watching more season 5 as I don't want to get the sequence any more confused than I already have.

And I still find the Daleks utterly ridiculous. How can anyone take them seriously when they have no discernable ability to open a can of soda without blowing it up? Sure, sure, they got weapons and a giant sucker, but really? no thumbs, no fingers, no ... I give up.

Psshaw. The Doctor always watches seasons completely out of order! If you can embrace the wibbly-wobbly time-y wime-y with the Doctor, where can you?

Seriously, though. I don't think you need to worry about season 5ish. (I always get confused- the specials really threw things off.) The show runner changed, and so while the same things that always carry over have carried over, there's very little....story continuity with RTD. That is, it's not been kicked out of canon or anything- it is just that RTD's stories are done. The new seasons are new stories, with only one plot carrying over from a single episode in a previous season (and in any case, it was an episode written by the current show runner). So there's very little risk of being confused or spoiled.

I say this because my feelings were much the same as yours (found Rose a bit annoying, loved Donna, liked Martha, etc). But...hm...

let me put it this way: By the end of RTD's run, I was so burned out on the show that it took me a year to watch Matt Smith's doctor, even though I think Stephen Moffat is a writing god and everyone said the show was the best thing since sliced bread.

This isn't a "oh my god, the later seasons sucked" kind of thing. Just that my...tolerance for certain RTD-isms waned to absolutely nothing, and that I wasn't alone in this. So you might want to maybe also continue with Season 5ish while mainlining everything else, just in case. Season 5 is puppies and rainbows and joy. Trufax.

*smishes you hard*

I am going to assume that RTD = Russel Davis Thomas, the writer for seasons 1-4? :)

I am ever so pleased to hear that there is little continuity so I can hope into season 5 again! \o/ because I love Eleven! I like Ten, yes, yes, but Matt Smith - gah, so cute. And Amy and Rory and ... heeeeee....

I don't know if you read my post about why I avoided Dr Who, but the RTD-isms is exactly why I did avoid it. OTT, bad acting (from Rose) and just generally being wary. Eleven changed that, so I am giving the earlier seasons another shot. There've been some good 'uns and some shockers! :)

I must say I am fascinated by the Dr's backstory and I know there really isn't anything canon besides barbones BUT I am sure there is fic galore exploring it all. I will explore fic, eventually, once I've caught up.

to new fandoms!

Yup. RTD- Russell T Davies.

Steven Moffat has really lived up to his promise. His episodes were always the best in the first couple years (and kept winning hugo awards). I only wish his reign had started a bit earlier. I love Matt Smith and all the rest with a passion, but something that drove me nuts about season 4 was that it didn't live up to the talent. The acting and chemistry was always fantastic, but the writing just wasn't there to back it up.

I started watching Doctor Who when I lived in the UK. Fandom for the show is kind of a national thing there. Way before I actually knew anything about any fandom of any sort, my friends would say things like, "ooh, steven moffat episode tonight. awesome." And spoilers and interviews were published in all the papers and middle aged checkout stand ladies would remark on my book bag (which could expand to hold a lot of stuff) and say things like, "ooh, it's like the tardis in there".

Kvetching about the writing always takes me back :-D

*snort* Russell T Davies! :) Thanks for the insight :)

Alas, I had already left the UK by the Dr Who (new) started so I missed out on all that.

Have you seen the Never Mind the Buzzcocks episode that David Tennant hosted? the one with Catherine Tate as a guest? One of my favs (next to the Josh Groban one).

I just watched 5.8 and 5.9 and all worried about Rory... sigh.

... could I maybe lure you over to Torchwood by telling you that Martha also did a few guest spots? No? Well, can't blame a girl for trying ;)

If I had to choose, I also would say that Donna is my favourite companion, but I think some of the best DW episodes happened with Martha.

season 4 completely and utterly sealed Donna as my fav Ten companion ;)

I loved Martha and that she got her own peace and love - Mickey. But Donna, gah, Donna. So damn awesome.

alas, Martha on TW is not sufficient temptation just yet. Donna? Maybe! :)

I am not sure why Martha needed to be hooked up with Mickey. That came a bit out of nowhere, without any backstory. What happened to this cute Doctor she fancied? Wasn't that a better match for her?

And yes, I totally like the scene where she tells the Doctor, that she is leaving. Guess that does not happen very often to him!

If you want to see David and Catherine play together again, go here and download "Much ado about nothing": http://www.digitaltheatre.com/production/details/much-ado-about-nothing-tennant-tate/

It's what I saw live in theatre (twice!) and it's wonderful, all the banter between them. I am so glad it got filmed!
