Whilst searching for good gen Teen Wolf fic I saw this fic bookmarked and was drawn in by the premise:
Title: To Find Out Long Forgotten Gold
Author: Wealhtheow21
Premise: AU of movieverse. It is many years since tragedy struck the line of Durin when the youngest heir was lost to a pack of orcs. Now Bilbo Baggins, having agreed only to stealing treasure from a dragon, finds himself instead tangled up in a web of tragedy and revenge. Perhaps it's foolhardy of him to get involved at all, but really, someone has to try and keep these dwarves out of trouble. As for the rest, well, what is lost does not always stay lost forever.
Chapters: 39
Part of a series: Yes!! Hurrah
I have not read much LOTR or Hobbit fic. Mostly due to the fact that as slow as the books are, I still find the quality of writing superior and struggle reading fanfic which does not at least try to be 'less' modern. The LOTR/Hobbit world is such a classic, standard, genre setting world I generally struggle to read fanfic where the characters go OC so quickly, mostly because the poor writer struggles to maintain that classical standard. It's also why I don't read a lot of Pride and Prejudice fic. Modern AUs, sure, but not fic set in that time period. It's also why I have not written any fic in the Tolkien-world.
Further, its taken me awhile to get over the Hobbit. I was most irked at the stretch to three movies and the sloppy extensions. Tauriel did not annoy me overly, as I understood the need to add a female character, but I disliked the long drawn out story. Two movies would have been fine. It would have been snappier, and happier. I also was most reluctant to see Thorin, Fili and Kili on screen, get to like them and then mourn their loss. It was inevitable, I know, and I was even prepared to accept a complete AU movie where they lived.
I knew there would be fix-it fic out there. I knew there'd be loads of fixi-it fic, but I stayed away for the simple reason that I didn't want to dwell on the disappointment that was seeing young Fili and Kili die. *sniff*. Anyhoo, It's been a few years and that premise looked interesting, so I dived in to the fic.
Oh. My. Word! Incredible. Utterly, utterly incredible. Long, detailed, true to the classic form, and so so much powerful emotion. It was the perfect fic to read (and also not). Perfect because it was so so good, and but also not because it set such a high standard and now that I am looking for more fic to read... well... there is very little that I have found that meets that same standard.
but but, no need to fear, because the delightful wealhthowe21 has created a series and continued past the AU movie into sheer post the movie AU-ness and its all just so wonderful. Alas, she hasn't written anything new for a year, and I am assuming she is she, but gosh, its wonderful.
If you have a couple of days and you find the idea of an incredible, emotional AU of a hurt!Kili reconnecting to his family and Bilbo with a fix-it to the Hobbit movies intriguing, read this. You won't regret it. *three thumbs up!*
