MemeSurvey 2: H/C! But mostly hurt...

Bleugh, I am in a mood. Its an odd mood, and is most probably due to the fact that its Monday tomorrow, the weekend was not as relaxing/quiet as I needed it to be, the weather is murky and chilly, and my afternoon nap was too long.
So here's amemeSurvey of my own making, because I am procrastinating writing because 'the mood' will influence the atmosphere (so I keep telling myself) and as its Sunday night, lets talk H/C but mostly hurt! (its sure to cheer anyone up!)
1. What was the first tv/film/book (or all) when you realised you liked h/c?
2. Which do you prefer? Emotional or physical? Or the fine combination of the two?
3. What is your hurt limit/squick factor? Or do you not have one?
4. Do you find h/c influences your mood or matches it? (i.e. are there circumstances/moods when you seek it out?)
5. Should h/c be the focus of the fic/show or a delicious ancillary to the main plot?
6. Fav character to whump? (or fav half dozen?)
7. Which character did you try whump once, and it just didn't work? (or for the readers, which character whump did you not enjoy)
8. Fav type of h/c, whump? (if you can pick just one)
9. Do you need there to be some sort of comfort in the h/c? Or is hurt in and of itself good enough? OR is comfort on its own good enough, with just referencing the hurt?
10. Most recent 'onscreen' whump (h/c) you liked/enjoyed? (show/film/book)
Ok.... small request: I am in a h/c mood but am only finding old favs on delicious. Any 'new', 'recent'ish h/c fic in SGA, SPN, H50, Avengers you can rec? Gen please :)

Re: Part 2/2
Date: 2012-12-02 08:30 pm (UTC)7. As a Jack O'Neill fan, I tried my hands once at the "Jack as POW in Iraq" everyone does but I had a hard time with it and think I chickened out at the real dark stuff in the end. It was the time when all the news were full with what happened in Iraq prisons at the time, and since reality was so much worse than fiction... and as much as I like to read it, it felt weird to be the one to inflict this on my favourite character, you know? So in writing fanfictions I stuck to emotional h/c since then, which fits me better. Or humour, which fits me even more. I don't have any medical knowledge anyway, and I always found that the best stories were written by people who DO know their stuff.
8. Not sure if that is a type, but I really do like the hero standing proud in his bonds, laughing into the face of his capturers, teasing them totally unafraid (or at least not showing it). Of which Jack O'Neill really was a master ;)
9. Hurt itself is not a story. That's what I referred to above. There are people who just start their story and write simply torture, but that is not enjoyable, on the contrary, it leaves me totally cold and not involved, and I stop after a few lines. You need after all some breaks from the bad stuff, with a friend who is there in the prison cell together with the hero, or the hero finding comfort in the thought that he does it to protect his team. And there needs to be a happy end of course, with him saved in the end. I'm not so much for "talking about it all", though, I totally can relate to Jack (both Jacks actually) there, as I don't like to talk about my own feelings either.
Comfort on its own is not a story either. I'm for "show me, don't tell me". I need to FEEL it myself first, not just have people talk about it. Although aftereffects can be quite interesting and unexpected in times. Like PTSD. Flashbacks.
10. Okay, I peeked your answer there, as I had a guess, and it's the same ;) Arrow of course. Need to see Skyfall yet. When he dug out the bullet? That was a good start ;) I'd love to see more scenes like in the pilot, where he almost killed his mother. He looked pretty frightened there. I look forward to find out more about what happened on the island. That was what drew me most to the pilot when I watched the trailer.
And now I wonder if I feel comfortable with my answers out in the open like that... hm. Oh, what the heck. Hope you like it!

I haven't read a lot of Jack fic, mostly due to time constraints rather than desire :)
Re: Part 2/2
Date: 2012-12-02 09:09 pm (UTC)Jack had totally forgotten about his former life and ended up becoming a real member of society at this planet. It was all well thought out and described - the aliens did not talk so much with their mouths, more with their hands, sign language, and we know how good Jack always was with that, so he picked up on it well. He ended up being a Dad to three adopted children and lots more stuff happening. So, he led a wonderful life - till SG-1 found him. As there was another story going on parallel to this one, the author retold some important events from seasons 3 till 6, from the POV that Jack was not there to make a difference and what would happen then. Such interesting ideas!
Kinda like the movie "It's a wonderful life", you know? So you saw how big Jack's influence was for the better. So, in the end they found him, and it became a time travelling story, with them going back to the beginning and setting it all right. And there was a sad moment when he had to decide whether or not to leave his kids and life as he knew it, for people he did not remember much. But it all got a good solution in the end. It was a really great round story, which could easily make a good book.
What I liked most was the beginning - the aliens were not evil, they just did not know better. As the human physique was of course so much different from their own. They did not know how to treat him, you know? They might not even have known they were hurting him. Just imagine, if we had a grey Roswell alien, ill, how would we be supposed to treat him without knowing how his organs function? There was a lovely Doctor who tried her best she could. I later talked to the author and see, she was a Doctor herself. Told you they are the best for such kind of stories!

Date: 2012-12-02 09:33 pm (UTC)And this is chapter 2: http://www.jackfic.net/archive/archive/4/LLoQD_Ch2.html
From there on each new chapter is linked at the end. I also have it downloaded as a whole file but for some reason the link to the complete fic does not work anymore.
I think if you start to read you will be getting sucked into the strange world very quickly. I usually don't like weird names or an alien language (that's why I don't like Phantasy books or such) but here it all was very fascinating.
