Wotcha!

I am alive just super duper busy with RL and work *rolls eyes* The very few fannish things I am working on *sobs* are:
1). Hawaii_50_hc ficlet for alphabet challenge. SO far over the 500k mark *laughs at self*.
2) Back in Time vid... I had no idea just how many time travel related tv shows and movies there are... a comprehensive vid may not be possible
3) Flitting onto LJ at 10pm, quickly scanning the flist, and then going to bed.

My fannish life is sad. I miss you!

I went and saw the new Iron Man movie today, and was thinking of you when I saw it! But not just for fandom reasons. One of the 'trailers' was actually a super-cheesy tourism ad (when are they not) for South Africa, heh.

*wails* I don't know if I want to watch it. I love Tony but the Iron Man movies have failed me twice now *wails*

But YAY for SA tourism... cheesy is the standard I fear. Did it inspire to come visit? ;-)

I don't think I've seen a tourism ad (for anywhere) that hasn't been cheesy. It's the nature of the beast. Plus it was aimed at a british audience, so... but they did pick some really gorgeous landscapes to show.

I wrote a very long post (non-spoilery, with a few spoiler-y discussion points hidden under a spoilers cut) on my reactions to the movie. I actually found it really fun. I enjoyed myself thoroughly in the theater, and then I enjoyed myself deconstructing it a bit later. My reaction is a lot of...well, not fridge-logic, but the movie has a very different feel in many ways than the previous two movies, and I needed to kind of work that out. But it was a similar feeling to fridge logic, because analyzing the director's choices was not something that occurred to me in the film. Mostly what occurred to me while watching the film was things like, "!!!!" and "this movie is a gift to fandom". (there are many points in the movie that are like a checklist of fandom's favorite stuff.)

Twice disappointed? You didn't like the first one?

Ooo, I must check out the post. And YAY that you enjoyed. Avengers has set the bar pretty high in my mind ;)

*squees at gift to fandom comment*

I liked 75% of the first one. I loved Tony in the desert and captured and making his suit. I did not like the ending AT All. It felt anti climatic and weird... unfinished almost. I know it was the prequel to pretty much EVERYTHING but it left me feeling 'eh'.

Number 2 - I actually liked more from an ending perspective even if the rest of the movie was 'iffy' bordering on ok.

Must see when it starts in SA.

Yeah, the first one was kind of like, "oh crap, we've made 4/5th of a kind of serious movie, time to fit in fifteen minutes of giant metal men beating the crud out of each other." felt kind of tacked on. But it didn't really change the narrative that much, you could pretty much cut to the final bit and still have it work. So I was really pretty impressed with it. I hadn't seen any of the trailers, so the whole thing took me by surprise. I liked how grounded it was, how seriously it took emotional consequences, without being gritty/grim dark. I think its still my favorite of the movies.

Oy aye... I recall us having this conversation ;-) Those pleasant surprises are just that... awesome :)

I think for me, it needed another 15 minutes of resolution and Tony dealing with the consequences of being Iron Man with a cliffhangery end of Shield like connotations... maybe :)

Well, minus the SHIELD stuff, then I think the new movie might be for you. One of the reasons I said it was a gift to fandom is that it tackles head on the emotional consequences for Tony of what he's been doing. (and...um...other things. Seriously, fandom is going to have a ball with this movie.)
