Movie Review: Oz the Great and Powerful

I have fond memories of the Wizard of Oz, the songs, the colours, the characters. Its not an all time favourite movie, but still a good one. I was looking forward to Oz, mostly because of the cast and the premise. And I was very glad to see most of the promise deliver.Raimi restrained his inner horror tendencies. James Franco was relatable and made the con-man Oz likable. But I think most of my focus was on the Witches. I haven't seen Wicked, I tried reading it and gave it up as a bad purchase, but I was keen to see how the movie handled the pre-Wizard of Oz witches.
I figured on the ole switcheroo of roles with Evanora and Theodora in charge and pretending to be good (as it were). But I was thinking that Evanora would end up being the green witch and Theodora the one with the ruby slippers - so kudos Raimi for the misdirect. I am however ambivalent though about Theodora and her... descent into evil. Must men always be the reason for women to go bad? At least Evanora (apparently) was evil for evil's sake, but I guess I wanted Theodora's choices to be greyer, more loaded so that she goes evil by a path of lesser evil leading to greater evil. *shrugs*
On the whole though, I enjoyed. :)
