MemeSurvey 2: H/C! But mostly hurt...

Bleugh, I am in a mood. Its an odd mood, and is most probably due to the fact that its Monday tomorrow, the weekend was not as relaxing/quiet as I needed it to be, the weather is murky and chilly, and my afternoon nap was too long.

So here's a memeSurvey of my own making, because I am procrastinating writing because 'the mood' will influence the atmosphere (so I keep telling myself) and as its Sunday night, lets talk H/C but mostly hurt! (its sure to cheer anyone up!)

1. What was the first tv/film/book (or all) when you realised you liked h/c?

2. Which do you prefer? Emotional or physical? Or the fine combination of the two?

3. What is your hurt limit/squick factor? Or do you not have one?

4. Do you find h/c influences your mood or matches it? (i.e. are there circumstances/moods when you seek it out?)

5. Should h/c be the focus of the fic/show or a delicious ancillary to the main plot?

6. Fav character to whump? (or fav half dozen?)

7. Which character did you try whump once, and it just didn't work? (or for the readers, which character whump did you not enjoy)

8. Fav type of h/c, whump? (if you can pick just one)

9. Do you need there to be some sort of comfort in the h/c? Or is hurt in and of itself good enough? OR is comfort on its own good enough, with just referencing the hurt?

10. Most recent 'onscreen' whump (h/c) you liked/enjoyed? (show/film/book)

Ok.... small request: I am in a h/c mood but am only finding old favs on delicious. Any 'new', 'recent'ish h/c fic in SGA, SPN, H50, Avengers you can rec? Gen please :)

1. An old 'Midnight Caller' episode where Gary Cole's character got captured by some old frenemies and beaten up. It went 'click' in my head

2. I lean more towards physical, than just emotional. But I like the fine combination, with a heavy hand on physical.

3. Non-con and its associated tropes.

4. I find I seek it out when I am grumpy and fidgety. But I love reading it whenever... when I find a good h/c fic. Always keen for h/c :)

5. Delicious ancillary to an awesome plot.

6. Dean Winchester and John Sheppard :)

7. As a reader, I find myself veering away from Sam whump for some reason. But as a writer, I struggle with .... no one yet! :)

8. See my previous posts about buttons! (click on fav h/c moments) But I do love me a good captive, in danger, on the run h/c plot.

9. Personally, I don't need the comfort. I usually skip it. What?? I do *stares at you staring at me*

10. Arrow! \o/ (have high hopes for Skyfall too)

1. What was the first tv/film/book (or all) when you realised you liked h/c? Lord of the Rings featuring Aragorn and Legolas exclusively
It was actually when I discovered ff also

2. Which do you prefer? Emotional or physical? Or the fine combination of the two?
Combination of both

3. What is your hurt limit/squick factor? Or do you not have one?
No death scenes of my favorite characters. I don't read slash so that also includes some other areas I am NOT willing to read. I have been duped twice into reading Sheppard ff and found out into the story it was slash. NO warning in either case and it really burned me up.

4. Do you find h/c influences your mood or matches it? (i.e. are there circumstances/moods when you seek it out?)
Yes, sometimes I want to read some whump. Other times no so much

5. Should h/c be the focus of the fic/show or a delicious ancillary to the main plot?
NO, I don't want it as a main object of story line. I mean there must be a plot just like there must be one in a film or a tv show to keep me interested. Whump for sake of whump is of no interest to me

6. Fav character to whump? (or fav half dozen?)
Sheppard – Aragorn – Legolas – Vin Tanner – Chris Larabee

7. Which character did you try whump once, and it just didn't work? (or for the readers, which character whump did you not enjoy)
N/A

8. Fav type of h/c, whump? (if you can pick just one)
Not sure but I like a combination of physical and emotional not just one or other

9. Do you need there to be some sort of comfort in the h/c? Or is hurt in and of itself good enough? OR is comfort on its own good enough, with just referencing the hurt?
YES prefer it but not they lived happily ever after ie a box with a fancy bow on top when the story ends. Life is NOT like that

10. Most recent 'onscreen' whump (h/c) you liked/enjoyed? (show/film/book)
Not sure. I have not really picked up on any on tv and have not seen many films lately that feature it.

Ok.... small request: I am in a h/c mood but am only finding old favs on delicious. Any 'new', 'recent'ish h/c fic in SGA, SPN, H50, Avengers you can rec? Gen please :)

Let me think a bit and will get back to you with some suggestions. You may have already read them but. . .

LJ tells me I wrote too much so I have to put this into two comments.

*looks at watch to see if it's that time in the evening already where I spill my beans* - not quite yet, I usually am more talkative after midnight, but I'll give it a try! (and I just uploaded a new fitting icon especially for this post)

I'm also not reading your answers yet to be not influenced too much.

1. Two I think. One was an old Russian fairytale in a book where the hero had to jump into very hot and very cold water to get the princess... or something like that. The other one was an old movie with Lex Barker as Robin Hood where he got caught by the bad guys. Back then I did not even know that there was a name for it but I realized that I liked him more in bonds than out of them...

2. Both. On screen more the physical, as it is hard to portray the emotional well (or maybe it's just my unability to read people's emotions from faces) but in books or stories I like emotional just as well. Although I really don't think you can seperate it, as often one leads to the other.

3. I do have one. I have to say there are some pretty weird stories out there. I mean, there is whump, and there is whump. Some authors just torture and torture their characteres and do serious harm, that is way too dark for me.

4. No, I don't think so. But once in a time I get the odd craving to watch the episode "Solitudes"...

5. I have most experience with Stargate stories and I found that I liked most those that build up slowly. Where Jack was going onto a mission with his team, and might not feel well in the beginning, but didn't say so (of course) and then gradually became more ill until he couldn't hide it anymore and of course it was too late do return to Earth. Since I read most my stories at Jackfic, the Jackwhump WAS the plot ;) And we had some inventive and very good authors. But we also had a saying: "If you break him you have to fix him". So all was good in the end, usually with the last scene in the infirmary in Janet's hands (although he could be a difficult patient sometimes).

6. For me it's not so much a favourite character, but actor. When I start to watch a new show, and don't know yet whether I will become a fan - once I see such a scene and feel it deeply I know I am lost ;) RDA is very good at portraying pain, for example. Loved him both as Jack O'Neill and MacGyver. David Tennant is also very good, especially emotional pain. I've seen him in a lot of other series and movies now and he is really great and believable. If you don't know "Single Father", I can highly recommend it. Other characteres on the list are Jack Harkness (of course!) and Clark Kent, as portrayed by Dean Cain. And a German actor which you don't know.

Have you checked out the marvel big bang or the avengers fest fic exchange? I've seen some good stuff there recently.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/567102 "She is Nataliya. She is Nathalie. She is Talia. She is Natasza. She is Natasha. A story of how Natasha Romanoff found herself, with a little help from that annoying American with the bow." (and the art: http://users.livejournal.com/_odella_/105505.html)

Jessica Jones fic! http://marvel-bang.livejournal.com/16404.html It's Jessica Jones in the MCU, and it was great. My biggest complaint was that the author is obviously shipping Jessica/Steve (though the fic is gen) when Luke Cage is right there and their chemistry is awesome, hah.

I haven't read this because it sounded too h/c for me. It says it's gen. No idea of the quality. http://avengersfest.livejournal.com/11973.html
"Summary: Written for my Avengers fest challenge/prompt/assignment/thingy; angst, reads like hurt/comfort but the comfort part is the hurt, dark, pre Iron Man, Obadiah Stane works his way into Tony’s life.
Warning/Spoilers: Pre-Iron Man fic written by someone who knows nothing about the comic universe so possible canon destruction, mindfuckery (Obadiah Stane/Tony Stark – not sexual content), non-sexual desperation watersports, Stockholm syndrome, past emotionally abusive Howard (not physical or sexual or even intentional), profanity."

This was rec'd to me, and I have to admit it was pretty well done: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8239460/1/Flames-We-Never-Lit Peggy Carter is frozen in 1946 and awakened by SHIELD in 2012.

I also read that really long fic Apocrypha from the 2011 J2 big bang: http://archiveofourown.org/works/233426/chapters/357263 (117k words!) It was actually pretty good. It's kind of a grand unifying preseries fic that integrates John into the later mythology- what he knows, what he's doing preseries and during season 1. It's framed through his time in hell, and is one of the first fics i've seen that makes the quasi-fanon that John held out for 100 years in hell palatable to me. (i know that alistair said that, but when I heard that line, I automatically assumed he was lying. Especially as relatively early into season 2, the demons were trying to get Dean to cut a deal, even a ten year one.) But yeah, the fic is actually really well done. It suffered from a weak summary, I think.

You've probably read this one, from the gen bb last year I think, http://archiveofourown.org/works/512891/chapters/904602 Ghosts of Future Past, where season 4 Dean keeps getting visits from his own future ghosts, trying to get him to fix things and do them right. They also download all of their memories into his brain, so he gets a little wobbly on reality at times.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/547998 The Avengers in the End 'Verse. It was one of those crossovers where I wanted to scoff at its ridiculousness, but couldn't stop myself from clicking on it anyway. Because the End Verse is awesome. The story actually works, if you can believe it.

Oooh! Interesting!

1. What was the first tv/film/book (or all) when you realised you liked h/c?
That would have to be the old tv show Emergency. Cute firefighters, mortal danger, I was in love :)

2. Which do you prefer? Emotional or physical? Or the fine combination of the two?
I'm okay with a combination of the two, but I do lean more towards the physical - probably because it's easier to quantify and with (usually) a distinct beginning and road to recovery. Emotional can be more interesting because it can have long lasting effects, pop up in different ways, and never be 'better'.

3. What is your hurt limit/squick factor? Or do you not have one?
Generally not keen on anything that leaves a permanent crippling injury; there has to be some hope. Not big on death fic either.

4. Do you find h/c influences your mood or matches it? (i.e. are there circumstances/moods when you seek it out?)
Hmmm... no. always like a good h/c story.

5. Should h/c be the focus of the fic/show or a delicious ancillary to the main plot?
Have read wonderful fic where it is either.

6. Fav character to whump? (or fav half dozen?)
Dean, Sheppard, Rodney, Jack O'Neill, Tony Dinozzo

7. Which character did you try whump once, and it just didn't work? (or for the readers, which character whump did you not enjoy)
Tend not to be too much for Sam whump, unless it leads to Dean being awesome.

8. Fav type of h/c, whump? (if you can pick just one)
Not picky. But kinda like if the one being whumped needs to be saved at some point.

9. Do you need there to be some sort of comfort in the h/c? Or is hurt in and of itself good enough? OR is comfort on its own good enough, with just referencing the hurt?
Both. Definitely both.

10. Most recent 'onscreen' whump (h/c) you liked/enjoyed? (show/film/book)
Skyfall was good, but won't go into detail in case you haven't seen it :)
