As far as Sheppard is concerned, he plans never to return to Earth permanently. He said his farewell when he left with the Expedition and fully expects to live and die out in the wide expanse of the galaxy.
And although I am not a shipper, my head canon for Shep and the various women in his life is: he kept his distance from Teyla, not wanting to spoil his team's dynamics but felt she was a viable love interest, had a silent, unrequited love for Elizabeth and kept Sam company on nights when she was lonely.
