erm, my banner rotates so I have to think about which picture it might be. Is it the beach, with the white hotel in the distance?

And as usual, you make me blush! *fans self*

Uhm, Sam and Ruby in Repeat Business *flits off to re-read it*

right: You mean the scene where Sam is spying on Dean and the BAU team and Ruby is persauding him to leave Dean.

When I write I tend to have one or two firm 'scenes' in my head for the story. This was one of them. I think I wrote it before much of the story prior to that scene.

I knew Ruby was the real reason that Sam was ignoring Dean. This was the first time the reader's got to find out why. When thinking about all the reasons why Sam would leave Dean to the mercies (or lack thereof of) of T&E the only logical reason for me, would be 'because Ruby is lying to him and hooking him on demon blood'.

Sure, Sam ignores Dean prior to Stanford and you could realistically just write Sam as being oblivious to it all and leaving Dean. But I wanted poor ole Sam to have a 'real' reason and not be neglecting Dean just because.

Thus, writing that scene was fairly easy. Ruby's reasons for leaving Dean with T&E would be a) its safer for him (than hunting) and b) he won't understand what we're doing. Logical. Sam likes logical. Even if emotionally he's a big softie.

The difficult or touchy part in writing this was... how is Sam reacting? I wanted the guilt to shine through, to redeem Sam a little. But I also wanted his acceptance of the above Ruby reasons to be well... reasonable. And logically yes, it does make sense for Sam to leave Dean, to keep him safe. The 'ole I'll sacrifice my own emotional well being to save you. Typical Winchester.

But I also wanted the readers to shout at Sam 'You Moron! You have no idea what T&E are doing to him! Go rescue him!'

and then have Sam walk away.

Yeah, yeah, I'm cruel :)
